Our story

Humble Beginnings with Great Purpose

The Greater Phoenix Church of God started in late 1979 as a small group of believers who met in a local hotel’s meeting room. We sang praise to recorded hymns and educated ourselves on the teachings of the Bible through recorded sermons from other ministries. Our group of like-minded participants was focused on studying God’s word and using His lessons to be the best we could be as members of our community, with loved ones, coworkers, and even strangers. We were joined in our belief of keeping the Sabbath and holy days while sharing fellowship and a love of God.

In 2002, two elders were ordained, leading to live sermons. Shortly thereafter, we purchased an organ and incorporated live music into the worship service. When we moved to our current location on the Bethany Lutheran campus, we had a screen and projector available for video sermons, as well as classrooms for children’s worship services and a kitchen for potluck luncheons.

The Greater Phoenix Church of God Today

Today, we continue to grow as a church. Our projector shares song lyrics for the congregation to sing along, and we continue to feature guest speakers via video presentations. Our singing group started with one guitar and grew to offer a strong song service that features contemporary and traditional music each Sabbath.

We welcome guest speakers from a sister church to deliver Bible-based sermons, and both women’s and men’s group meetings are held monthly. Children’s services for our school-aged members are held most Saturdays during service. And our electronics have expanded to mic our speakers and offer hearing devices for those needing them.

Our Worship

We believe that all of the words God has conveyed through the Holy Spirit are for our good. We believe that all scripture is inspired by God for our reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness (1 Timothy 3:16). Therefore, we believe that the Lord changes not, and through His mercy, we have received a most precious gift: the opportunity to be free from the chains of sin, as God has sent His son to free us from unrighteousness. Christ is our Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7). He extends us grace to provide an opportunity to win daily (1 Peter 5:10), and He provides us comfort by knowing He has called us to work a perfect work in us through His grace.

Men and woman of all backgrounds are brought together in Christ Jesus through the love He has so freely given. The Greater Phoenix Church of God believes in the power of prayer, the humbling of ourselves, and the purpose of our calling. We extend the hand of friendship to all who sigh and cry for Christ and His glory. We preach not ourselves, as we believe in preaching Christ and Christ crucified. Our goal is to have everyone hear the beautiful offer of grace, mercy, and honor that Christ’s suffering has afforded us (1 Corinthians 15:3).
